Context is everything: when someones gives information, it’s incumbent on the reporter to check and see what the context of the material is, and whether what you’ve been given is complete, or merely a sampling. Additionally, don’t rush to publish something just because other news outlets might publish it first. Potentially libelous stories are the ones that need to be most carefully considered before they see the light of day.
