Google Donates $5M for News Innovation (NJL)

Google insists that it cares about journalism as a necessity of our shared democracy; news organizations resent it as a (perceived) key cause of the financial strife that keeps them from fully defending that democracy. Yesterday, though, brought an olive branch: Google will donate $5 million to encourage innovation in digital journalism; $2 million of it will go to the Knight Foundation, and $3 million will go to fund international news-innovation efforts, via a partnership with an as-yet-unannounced organization. Google Blog: According to Google’s official blog, while the company is “mostly focused on working with news organizations to develop better products for users, we also believe it’s crucial to encourage innovation at the grassroots level.” The ultimate aim is to “benefit news publishers of all sizes.”
