Starting today Economist readers will be able to find their favorite articles in either standard print or on their iPad or iPhone. Tech Watch reports that the London-based news magazine already has around 100,000 online paying subscribers and plans to secure one million digital users by 2013 with the help of this new app. The Economist’s digital managing director Oscar Grut is confident that the app will resonate with users:
“With the growing popularity of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, like the iPhone and the iPad, which offer an immersive reading experience, we are seeing strong demand and as a result a big opportunity for a publication like ours is emerging.”
The Economist is introducing the app in a time when their print publication is showing signs of growth. According to The Guardian, The Economist’s readership totals were up 4.2 percent in the first half of 2010.
