NYTIMES buyout

It was recently revealed that the New York Times had to release 100 newsroom employees, as reported earlier on Gothamite. This morning, the logistics of the buyout packages for those employees were released anonymously. One of the packets is basically a list of every Times employee. Each employee’s entry contains their department, job title, birth date and age. The list covers every sector of the company, including the printers, the security guards, the reporters. If the staffers do not join forces or raise their hands by December 7, 2009, there will be layoffs.

The New Yorker

Today comes word that The New Yorker is dusting itself off a bit and doing some youthful hiring:

The New Yorker has hired Amelia Lester, most recently an editor at the Paris Review, as their new managing editor.

Ms. Lester, 26, a Sydney native who graduated from Harvard, used to be a fact-checker at The New Yorker and checked all-star writers Sy Hersh and Jane Mayer.

It’s refreshing to hear that the world of publishing isn’t impossible for the young and eager.

Conde Nast

The New York Observer is the go-to source for media news and gossip, and their coverage of troubles at Conde Nast has been quite in depth. This week’s article, The Gilded Age of Conde Nast is Over, doesn’t tell us too much that we don’t know already. But the startling fine point on the article is that The New Yorker seems to be a bit immune from all the troubles. We’re pleased to hear that The New Yorker won’t have to suffer, but are other magazines taking cuts just to keep The New Yorker steady? We also love this cartoon of Anna, Graydon, and David, done by the ever interesting Robert Grossman.
